Fighting for the Middle Class

Many Middle Class Americans are struggling. They work hard and yet feel like they are falling further behind. I am running for Congress to fight for these working class families because I personally understand that struggle. My father worked the fields in Oxnard and our family lived in public housing. I focused on my education and worked my way through UCSB and served my country in the Marine Corps Reserves. I worked hard to get ahead and I am committed to making sure that same opportunity is afforded to others willing to put in the hard work.

Creating Good Paying Jobs

No one who works full time should live in poverty. We have to create more opportunities for people to lift themselves into the middle class and stay there. That’s why I will fight to raise the federal minimum wage. I will work across party lines to bring good paying jobs to the Central Coast through investing in our infrastructure, encouraging clean energy development, and embracing new technology. Upgrading our infrastructure is critical to our long-term economic growth and key to expanding the middle class. It puts people back to work, helps reduce traffic, and allows our businesses to get their products to market faster. As County Supervisor, I helped secure $100 million in local transportation funds to widen our highways …

Caring For Our Veterans

I joined the Marine Corps Reserves to give back to our country. Our veterans and their families face more challenges today than ever before after they return home from their service. In Congress, I will work to honor their service by tackling those challenges head on and make sure they receive the support they need. It’s time to step up for veterans the way they stepped up for us. The stories I have heard of our veterans not getting adequate or timely service from the VA are completely unacceptable. From accessible health care to job opportunities to financial aid for continuing education, we are falling short in our commitment to those who serve. We also need to take care of …

Strengthening Security in Retirement

Seniors have earned Social Security and Medicare. They have paid into the system throughout their working lives and deserve those benefits in retirement. Retirees are finding it harder to make ends meet. We should not be forcing our seniors to choose between their next meal and a lifesaving prescription. We need to strengthen Medicare and Social Security, not put these programs in the hands of the private market. I strongly oppose privatizing Social Security and oppose turning Medicare into a voucher system. Instead, we should find ways to increase Social Security benefits so that we provide additional retirement security to elderly Americans who are living longer than ever, and have found it difficult to save for 30 or more years …

Helping Our Students Achieve a Higher Education

I was the first in my family to graduate from college. That achievement did not come without assistance in the form of working multiple jobs, financial aid, student loans, and the Veterans Education Assistance Program. Middle-class families are struggling to send their children to college because it is unaffordable. It’s outrageous that so many students and their families have to take on crushing amount of debt just to get the education they need to compete in our economy. What makes it worse is that they are paying higher interest rates than they should. We need to do everything in our power to make college more affordable including lowering interest rates for government backed loans, allowing students to refinance their loans, …

Pushing for Sensible Gun Laws

When I was a young boy, my sister used my father’s gun and committed suicide. I am no stranger to the tragedy inflicted on family in the wake of gun violence. Our community came together after the devastating shootings around UCSB. For me, it underscored the need to do everything we can to keep guns away from those who pose a danger to our society. We need to have common-sense reforms in place, like preventing those on the no-fly list from buying a gun, banning high-capacity ammunition purchases, and putting background checks in place to ensure guns don’t fall into the hands of criminals or the mentally ill.

Preserving Our Natural Environment

Our coastline and natural environment are renown. It is our responsibility to preserve the unique communities, scenic views, and open spaces along the Central Coast. I have worked to bring Democrats and Republicans together to preserve huge open spaces for future generations to enjoy. I am proud to have served on President Obama’s task force on climate change to come up with a range of sustainable solutions to be implemented at the state and local levels. I led efforts locally to tackle carbon pollution as a strategy to combat climate change. In Congress, I will continue to say no to any new offshore drilling and instead encourage us to move toward cleaner energy solutions that help create new jobs, like …
